Hundreds of women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in Kuwait, reflecting an alarming increase of the disease.

National Cancer Awareness Campaign chairman Dr Khalid Al Saleh reported 556 new cases on average annually.

"The prevalence of breast cancer is the highest in the world, making up 42 per cent of tumours among women in the world," he said.

Citing figures, he said that 15 women out 100,000 people were diagnosed with the disease on average during the period between 1974 and 1984.

The rate increased almost four-fold to 56 cases for every 100,000 people during the period from 2008 to 2012.

Dr Al Saleh expected the rate to increase to 75 cases on average for every 100,000 people.

He said that on average 12pc of Kuwaiti women diagnosed with the disease are less than 40 years, Al Jarida reported.
