Age-old ‘wataniya’ School Shut – ‘unsafe For Students’
The administration of the Fahaheel Arab National School (Al-Wataniya School) announced the closure of the school building from the new academic year, which will start in September, due to the deterioration of the school building without maintenance or restoration, reports Al-Anba daily. In a letter sent to the Ministry of Education, the school administration stated, “We sent numerous correspondence and letters to the office of the Minister of Education and the Department of Private Education, asking for assistance and approval to allocate one of the government buildings belong to the Ministry of Education and have been vacant and unused for years such as the Religious Institute building, the Al-Amal Kindergarten building, and the Latifa Al-Fares School, all of which are in Fahaheel area. “Our request was aimed to enable the relocation of our students, carry out the educational journey, and continue supporting the education sector in Kuwait.
The Arab National School of Fahaheel is in the only private school under the private education sector. It serves the entire tenth district, which includes more than 4,300 students, It has provided educational service for more than 50 years for all age groups, most of them with limited income and Bedoun residents”. The school affirmed that it has worked hard throughout the past half a century to maintain the current school building and carry out its maintenance and restoration, but without feasibility due to its severe structural deterioration. Fearing for the safety of the students, the educational and administrative staff, and the urgent need for an alternative building and the students’ relocation to that building, the school said, “This is aimed so that we can continue and complete our educational journey that we have been keen about throughout these past years. The Fahaheel National School is an ancient school from which a large number of students graduated over these years. It has contributed and is still contributing to the success and support of the education sector.”
The administration indicated that they are yet to receive a response from the Ministry of Education regarding the issue, which addresses the safety of the students and the educational staff, stressing that there is no choice otherwise but to close the school permanently for the 2021/2022 academic year.
