After A Two-year Hiatus, India Resumes International Flights

27 March 2022 India

Today, India resumed regular scheduled international flights after being halted by the COVID-19 pandemic for over two years. International flights, however, had operated in an arrangement known as "air bubbles" with several nations.

Furthermore, the government has loosened COVID-19 safety regulations at airports and on flights, such as eliminating the requirement of having three empty rows within an aircraft.

There were only around 2,000 flights per week under the previous "air bubble" agreements, and ticket prices were high. As airlines add capacity during the summer vacation season, there could be some relief to passengers as regular flights return.

The airline said in a statement it flies to Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Jeddah, Riyadh, Bangkok and Doha among other international destinations. According to the airline, scheduled flights will begin again on 150 routes in phases throughout April.

Dubai-based airlines Emirates and Qatar Airways plan to resume pre-pandemic services across their destinations on April 1. Emirates operated 170 weekly flights to nine destinations before India ended scheduled international flights in March 2020, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata.
