Aeroflot Pilot 'dies' During Emergency Landing After Having 'heart Attack' Mid-air

The pilot of a domestic flight in Russia suffered a heart attack mid-air and is believed to have died during decent as the aircraft made an emergency landing.

Crew of the Aeroflot flight SU1546, flying from Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport to popular Black Sea resort of Anapa, made a frantic appeal to passengers asking if there were doctors onboard.

According to reports in Independent, passenger Yelena Voronova, told local media: "A stewardess ran across the aisle. They later asked if there were any doctors onboard and said they really needed them."

The crew sought permission for emergency landing to seek immediate medical treatment following which the plane landed in the city of Rostov-on-Don. According to reports in Mirror.co.uk, the 49-year-old pilot was flying Airbus 320, which seats 150 passengers, at 33,000 ft when he became ill. He was given medical help at Platov International Airport in Rostov-on-Don, but was was pronounced dead.

According to flight tracking data, the plane took off again for Anapa two and a half hours later.

In similar incidents of mid-air medical emergency, in January, a cabin crew member onboard a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Honolulu to New York died mid-flight. While in June 2018, a co-pilot suffered a seizure in the cockpit of a Flybe flight and became incapacitated, causing the plane to make a violent movement after he repeatedly pressed on the plane's pedals.
