According To Who, Covid Boosters Are Required, Reversing A Previous Statement
The World Health Organization has convened an expert group to recommend that booster doses of COVID-19 vaccine be provided urgently to everyone affected by omicron epidemic. The move marks a reversal of previous UN statements that booster doses weren't needed and occurred because of vaccine inequity.
Despite the continued spread of the highly infectious omicron-variant, WHO's expert group has concluded that vaccination with authorised COVID-19 vaccines provides effective protection against serious diseases and death. The WHO backed off its earlier position on boosters in January, saying supplies must be adequate and vulnerable populations must be protected before boosters can be recommended.
People at risk of severe disease should use booster vaccines, as well as vaccination.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is the director-general of the WHO. He has called for a moratorium on booster dosages while dozens of countries administer the doses. He argues that rich countries should instead donate these vaccines to poor countries. In response, the WHO stated they would continue to review the information.
An 18-member advisory group drafted the updated recommendations, which assess the effectiveness of vaccines against "variants of concern" like omicron.
Research has proven that booster doses of vaccines provide protection against COVID-19, as well as restore waning immunity. In rich nations such as the United States, Canada and Britain, booster programs have been credited for preventing an outbreak of omicron infections in hospitals.
Several cases of omicron have been re-infected following an initial case of the virus in people with a **stealth" variant known as BA.2. Vaccines are equally effective against it, according to research.
Currently, the WHO's COVID-19 vaccines are based on the strain first identified in Wuhan, China over three years ago.
The virus has evolved continuously since then, and it is likely that new variants will emerge as a result, the agency reported. According to the report, there may need to be an update to the Coronavirus vaccine.
