Absconding Maids Working In Shisha Cafes
The phenomenon of runaway and absconding maids in pursuit of attractive salary packages in mixed-gender sheesha cafés has become rampant in the country even though the owners of these cafés are aware that the maids are violating the residency law by running away from their sponsors, reports Al-Shahed daily.
This is due to the absence of tough security controls which has in turn been contributing to the aggravation of such negative phenomena and irregularities, especially with lawbreakers devising new methods to break the law.
Many mixed-gender cafés in Salmiya and Hawally areas have drawn attention due to huge presence of absconding maids who ran away from the houses of their sponsors. A law enacted by Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor does not permit the employment of women in sheesha cafés.
;However, the ministry has since abstained from practicing its authority, while security authorities of Ministry of Interior failed to launch intensive campaigns at these suspicious places which are depending on the female element to woo and attract youths, teenagers and bachelors among the expatriate community.
Many investors of sheesha cafés, majority of who are expatriates, are seeking to maximize their profits by increasing female presence in their cafés. They choose certain types of maids to work for them at salaries exceeding KD 200 per month. The absconding maids happily agree to work as their presence there does not require a work permit or visa.
