A Taxi Driver Sentenced To 15 Years In Jail

06 April 2016 Kuwait

The Court of Appeals presided over by Judge Anwar Al-Enezi overturned the verdict issued by the Court of First Instance which sentenced a taxi driver to 15-year imprisonment for allegedly attempting to rape an Ethiopian woman. The court instead refrained from pronouncing penalty and ordered the suspect to sign a good conduct pledge and pay the bail bond. According to the case file, the suspect drove the victim to a campsite where he tried to rape her but he did not succeed because she resisted and escaped from the campsite.

The prosecution witness said he was driving down Sixth Ring Road close to the camping area at around 3 am when he saw the woman by the roadside crying and with bruises on her face. He immediately called the Operations Room of Ministry of Interior after which police officers rushed to the location and picked her. He revealed that the suspect picked the woman from a taxi office where he was working after another driver dropped her there. He affirmed that the phone number she gave the police belonged to the suspect.
