A Slight Earthquake Hit Northwest Jahra

29 October 2020 Information

Arabic local newspaper Aljarida reported that A very minor earthquake measuring 1.6 on the Richter scale hit the northwestern Jahra region.

A source familiar with the monitoring of the relevant authorities in the country reported the earthquake, pointing out that its force, which struck at 1.30 pm, is difficult for a person to feel.

He mentioned that the country also witnessed another minor earthquake 6 days ago, with a magnitude of 2.2 on the Richter scale and a depth of 9 km northwest of Kuwait City.

The source pointed out the importance of the national seismic network to announce information on simple or moderate tremors that hit the country from time to time, to contribute to a comparison of numbers.

He added that Kuwait witnesses more than 900 earthquakes annually, according to seismic networks. Globally, every second there is an earthquake, but it is not felt because its strength is small.

The source warned of the danger of silence about the tremors, given Kuwait’s proximity to a seismic belt, known as the Zagros Mountains, located in western Iran, which had an impact in 2017 on Kuwait after the violent earthquake that reached 7 degrees on the Richter scale.
