12 May 2022 Kuwait

Bassam Al-Shammari, an expert in domestic labor affairs, says that allowing Ethiopian workers into the domestic labor market will help balance the domestic economy and solve the problem of the deficit of labor the country is experiencing at the moment, especially since Ethiopians have comparatively low salaries compared to other nationalities.

Kuwaiti Prime Minister Ali Al-Shammari revealed that Kuwait and Ethiopia will resume talks to finalize the MoU on the control over the recruitment of domestic workers from Addis Ababa as soon as possible.

An Ethiopian delegation is due to visit Kuwait soon (around mid-May) to finalize all paperwork and finalize the details of the Memorandum of Understanding.

Kuwait currently faces a severe shortage of domestic workers, which this agreement will help remedy. Al-Shammari explained that every local office expects to sign the memorandum of understanding between the two sides and contract with their counterparts in Addis Ababa in the coming weeks.

Adding new executive regulations issued by the Public Authority for Manpower regarding domestic workers, which have been widely accepted and approved by recruitment offices, Al-Shammari urged the PAM to add those provisions to the definition of employees, office owners, and employers.
