A Blood & Honor Relationship Between Kuwait And The United States Of America

Sheikh Salem Al-Abdullah, Kuwait's Foreign Minister, praised Kuwait's long and close bilateral relations with the United States of America, as well as their existing strategic partnership, saying he is eager to see further progress and development.

Sheikh Al-Abdullah, speaking at the ceremony organized by the US Embassy to mark the 246th anniversary of the Independence of the United States, stressed on the depth of these relations in various fields and at all levels to achieve the common interests of the two countries and their friendly peoples. He pointed out that during his tenure as Kuwait’s ambassador to the United States his daily work was to emphasize the strength of bilateral relations, indicating that they are on the right track. He went on to say, “We are proud of the progress of bilateral relations, and the United States of America is a favorite destination for Kuwaiti students, patients and tourists, and has a special place in the heart of every Kuwaiti”. Sheikh Al Abdullah praised the ambassador’s efforts and contributions in the context of strengthening the close bilateral relations that bind the two friendly countries. In turn, Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Kuwait, James Holtsnider, called Kuwait a reliable international partner and “we look forward to working with the new government for our common future.”

“I am very happy,” he said, “to see you all at the embassy after three years hiatus due to the “Corona” pandemic, explaining that nearly two and a half centuries ago and with an enlightened vision of the future and the belief of his head in a great nation, The Declaration of Independence marks the start of a new era of democracy for a nation that supports and upholds its independence, sovereignty, freedom and equality for its people. “As we prepare for the national elections in the United States in a few weeks, I would like to congratulate Kuwait on the successful parliamentary elections that took place recently, pointing out that Kuwait was and will continue to be a model in democratic institutions in the region, explaining that Kuwait is a reliable international partner and we look forward to working with The new government for our common future.”

He stressed that democracy is not a guarantee, but it must be acquired and protected, explaining that throughout the history of the United States has supported democracy, thanking all members of the armed forces in Kuwait and abroad for their work and sacrifices. He praised the US-Kuwaiti relations, which he described as “long-standing and historical”, he considered it a great legacy for us as partners, allies and friends, pointing out that this year witnesses the beginning of the seventh decade of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the celebration of the 31st anniversary of the liberation of Kuwait through Operations Storm and Desert Shield where the United States formed a coalition of 35 countries that succeeded in liberating them from the clutches of invasion. He added, during the few years I spent in Kuwait, Kuwait was an amazing ally. When Ukraine was occupied by Russia, Kuwait stood with the right side of history and supported the decision to send humanitarian aid to Ukraine, and played a leading role in the evacuation of American diplomats and nationals from Afghanistan and thanked His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad for his partnership and leadership. Holtsnider described Foreign Minister Sheikh Salem Al-Abdullah as a true diplomat and ambassador in all the meanings of the word, with long experience and a rich career spanning nearly three decades in the United States, Korea and others, noting that over the past 20 years he has been working daily to strengthen and support US-Kuwaiti relations. In a statement to reporters on the sidelines of the ceremony, Holtsneider pointed out that the large attendance reflects the position of the United States and the depth of the partnership between the two countries, looking forward to cooperating with the Foreign Minister to support the bilateral relations process. When the Kuwaiti media, on the sidelines of the celebration, attempted to get a statement from the Foreign Minister Sheikh Salem Al-Abdullah, he joked, “The media is in my heart and we will open all doors for you.”

The 246th anniversary celebration embodied the depth of the solid relations between the two countries, through the distinguished presence of Foreign Minister Sheikh Salem Al- Abdullah in the first diplomatic ceremonial participation after assuming his duties, in addition to the a large crowd of sheikhs, ministers, government representatives, ambassadors and media men. Hundreds of invitees attended the celebration, including the Editor-in-Chief of the Arab Times and Al-Seyassah newspapers, economic and commercial personalities, and Chargé d'Affaires Jim Holtsnider, his wife, and the Embassy staff, who offered their congratulations.
