9 Problems Needs To Be Addressed Before Philippines Bans Its Domestic Workers
A group of Kuwait and Filipino domestic workers offices have warned about the seriousness of current situation of Filipino domestic workers in Kuwait, suspension of recruitment of such workers is highly anticipated. During the meeting yesterday through Zoom 9 main points were discussed about the realistic situation.
The general manager of Al-Durra International Domestic Labor Company, Bassam Al-Shammari, said that the meeting included many Kuwaiti and Filipino domestic workers’ offices, during which they warned of the increasing problems faced by Filipino domestic workers in Kuwait compared to neighboring countries which is just 20%.
Al-Shammari stated that the two assemblies identified a long list of problems faced by Filipino workers, to put them before decision-makers on both sides in order to reach practical and radical solutions that guarantee the rights of everyone, before it comes to a situation that Filipinos will be banned from sending to Kuwait, reports Al Rai. 9 points which were discussed were as follows:
1 – Comprehensive treatment, where the meeting addressed the need to comprehensively address the rights of Filipino workers, and stress the importance of adhering to the terms of the work contract between the worker and his sponsor.
2 – Review the mechanism of dealing between the worker, the recruitment office and the sponsor, with the Department of Domestic Labor to ensure their rights.
3 – Allowing workers’ rights to be guaranteed by recruitment agencies, in addition to the Domestic Workers Administration.
4- Opening the door for the recruitment office to defend the domestic workers that it brings before the official authorities, especially the Domestic Labor Department.
5- Tying the guarantee period of 6 months for the worker to the commitment of the sponsor towards him as well, in terms of fulfilling the terms of the contract, in relation to salaries, vacations, and the number of working hours.
6- Ensuring the implementation of the provisions for a decent life for the domestic worker, such as adequate food and drink, adequate housing, and the provision of personal needs stipulated in the contracts.
7 – Speeding up the dispute procedures, so that workers’ rights are not lost, as they are forced to stay in the shelter for several months, until the end of the procedures, which ultimately leads to solutions that may force the worker to give up for the length of that period.
8 – Government concern for employment, cases are reserved and brought to trial without following up with the workforce attorney, something that needs to be stopped.
9 – “Overtime”, not counting vacation days during which workers are forced to work, as an additional wage, is something that deserves to be addressed.
