8,189 Indians Lodged In Various Jails In Foreign Countries, Maximum Inmates In Saudi Arabia
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said there is a total of 8,189 Indians lodged in foreign prisons. Saudi Arabia has maximum number of Indian lodged in jail. Roughly half of this number, 4206 Indians are imprisoned in six Gulf Corporation Council (GCC) nations, the Minister of State for External Affairs told Lok Sabha. There is a total number of 1,811 Indians in prisons in Saudi Arabia while a total of 1,392 Indians are lodged in prisons in the UAE.
The political and economic ally of six Middle Eastern countries- UAE, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia constitute the GCC. The news agency PTI reported.
In 2011, India and the UAE had signed an agreement which allows the transfer of the Sentenced persons and it came into effect in 2013.
Among other things, the agreement includes conditions for the transfer of prisoners and obligations to give information on them. But the minister told that no Indian prisoner has been transferred under this agreement till date.
However in October 2018, the consulate General of India in Dubai had sent a proposal to the government about the transfer of 77 Indian prisoners under the agreement which also has the provision that the prisoners transferred can serve the remainder of the sentence in India.Â
"The proposal is being processed by the authorities concerned in the UAE and India in accordance with the procedures laid down in the Agreement on Transfer of Sentenced Persons between India and UAE," he said in his reply.
The minister also told that the mortal remains of 14, 312 Indian nationals from 125 countries have been brought back till May 31, 2019 since 2016.
