80 Expats Nabbed During Security Raids
Local media reported that Kuwaiti police have begun a crackdown on illegal residents violating the country's residency and labor laws.
Al Rai newspaper reports that 80 violators of various nationalities were arrested during raids in Kuwait City, Hawalli, and Jleeb Al Shuyouk Governorates.
The Interior Ministry's Media department reports 48 people were arrested in absentia, 13 people had expired residency permits, and two foreigners had expired visas, among others.
In addition to the five expatriates who didn't work for their sponsors, 12 others were also arrested due to lack of identification papers produced by the residency affairs police. The cases were referred to legal and administrative authorities for necessary procedure, it added without elaborating.
In Kuwait, illegal foreign residents have been given multiple opportunities to readjust their status.
Kuwait's Al Anba newspaper reported last month that authorities would impose fines on foreigners who came to Kuwait on visit visas and did not violate laws while still in the country.
A two-year ban on sponsorship visas could also be the punishment for those sponsors, according to the report.
Kuwaiti officials are considering these measures after some 14,650 foreigners who entered the country on visit visas in the past three years did not depart for their home countries, swelling the ranks of illegal exiles in Kuwait, according to an unidentified source quoted by the newspaper.
In the wake of COVID-19, the Gulf country strives to correct its demographic imbalance.
