6,364 Juvenile Crimes Registered In Two-and-half Years

The index of juvenile crimes in the country rings alarm bells because it foretells that these misdemeanors will turn into a phenomenon and much attention must be paid to this phenomenon because the Ministry of Justice statistics show an increase of 6,000 cases over the past 2-and-a-half years, reports Al-Qabas daily.

The Statistics and Research Department of the Ministry of Justice said from Jan 1, 2016 to June 31, 2019, the juveniles account for 6,364 misdemeanors, which were dealt with by the courts, ranging from bloody and violent quarrels, thefts, drugs and recklessness.

According to the Al-Qabas daily specialists say the most prominent cause is the family disintegration and neglect and the abundant spread of the phenomenon of violence be it in schools or homes because most often than not these juveniles are left with nothing to do in their free time. This is in addition to weak supervision which lead to the rise in juvenile misdemeanors, Professor of Criminal Psychology at the Kuwait University, Dr Talal Al-Ali, summarized the reasons for the increase in juvenile misdemeanors in the intellectual vacuum experienced by the society as a whole and juveniles in particular.

Al-Ali told Al-Qabas, “The weakness of the educational system and the lack of sports institutions which allow young people to engage in unhealthy activities including crime. “Developing education will help us to shut down prisons. We are dealing with unproductive and unhappy generations and the solution lies in reviving the civil society and the development of the educational aspect,” Al-Ali added.

The weakness of family control and the natural environment shapes the behavior of a juvenile. There are some parents who neglect their children and leave them to take care of themselves which gives the children ample time for unproductive and destructive activities, said Atyab Al-Shatti, Assistant Secretary General of the Human Rights Association.

The educational institutions both government and the private also influence the behavior of juveniles. It is surprising that social workers are unheard of in most schools. Al-Shatti stated that the failure of the media in all its forms contributes to that problem, because the media has a tremendous impact in shaping the societal awareness of the individual, and has a great role in dealing with the phenomenon of juvenile crime.

She pointed out that there are also programs and artistic works that glorify the phenomenon of violence, and make those who commit crimes like model heroes to follow in their footsteps not to mention the absence of religious programs which contribute to rejecting the phenomenon of violence.

She pointed out that “the law guarantees the establishment of appropriate measures and penalties to treat this phenomenon, but this is not sufficient, as the correct treatment must start from the family, the school, the media, and religious institutions.” Justice ministry suggests the concerned authorities putting in place preventive measures against crime and delinquency; family implanting religious and social values in the hearts of children; educating parents on educational and psychological methods; schools showing interest in the development of students and their talents and organizing courses for teachers to interact socially with students.
