6 Out Of 76 Co-ops Committed To Direct Purchase Agreement
Kuwait Farmers Union Chairman Abdullah Al-Dammak revealed that only six out of 76 cooperative societies are committed to the direct purchase agreement, reports Al-Rai daily. This came after one week of implementing the ministerial decision on supporting local agricultural products through an agreement with cooperative societies to purchase directly from approved outlets — Wafir Company and the union. Al-Dammak told the daily that most cooperative societies are not committed to the agreement, which is aimed at reducing the prices of vegetables and fruits in cooperatives. He pointed out the agreement stipulates selling local agricultural products in cooperatives without a mediator.
He explained that cooperatives are obligated to purchase local agricultural products in the daily auction — not less than 75 percent of their needs depending on the available supply. He said the purchase should be reflected in systemized invoices and it should be through the approved sales outlets. He added the Ministry of Social Affairs formed a committee tasked to implement the decision and monitor cooperatives, while attributing the cooperatives’ reluctance to abide by the agreement to the lack of coordination with the committee whose members are from the Consumer Protection and Competition units at the Ministry of Commerce, the Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) which is responsible for securing and marketing local agricultural products, and the Ministry of Social Affairs whose functions include activating the role of the financial and administrative controllers in each cooperative society.
