400 Suspected Visa Trading Deals Under Investigation

15 May 2020 Kuwait

Teams tasked with investigating visa trading have been going through 400 files of those suspected of breaking the labor laws, according to the Public Authority for Manpower (PAM).

These irregularities came to light after the Ministry of Interior (MoI) allowed residency law violators to leave the country without paying fines under amnesty in April. Among the suspects include an Arabic- language teacher working for the Ministry of Education, who allegedly received KD2,000 dinars to bring Egyptian workers, and provide them housing for a few days following their arrival in Kuwait.

He is believed to be a middleman under the employ of a visa trader.

In April, Kuwait Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Anas Al-Saleh formed a team aimed at eliminating human traffickers who were importing large numbers of expatriates and leaving them unattended, as well as ending the source of their funding.

In addition, President of the Board of Directors of the Transparency Society, Majed Al-Mutairi, announced that 10 public service societies are collaborating under a campaign titled ‘I am responsible’, to encourage all citizens and expats to report visa traders, reports AlSeyassah daily.

The campaign also aims to uphold justice and the rule of law and apply pressure on officials to take positive decisions to tackle corruption that has been allowed fester for a long time, which has lead to expats being swindled and irregular demographics. Requests have been given to Kuwait officials to amend the current legislation to end exploitation, and support workers rights and employers according to constitutional and humanitarian principles and international treaties.
