287 Candidates Vie For 50 Parliament Seats

One week ahead of the race, the Ministry of Interior unveiled Saturday the final list of candidates for the upcoming 2016 parliamentary elections.

In a press statement, the Ministry of Interior's Public Relations and Media noted that a total of 168 candidates have quit the race, slated for November 26, for various reasons: 128 candidates have voluntary withdrawn and 40 others were disqualified by the election commission.

This took the number of candidates who will complete the race down from 455 in the primary list to only 287 in the final one, the statement stated. The remaining 287 candidates will vie for the parliament's 50 seats in five constituencies, it added.

The final list showed that 52 candidates will compete for the 10 seats of the first constituency after the withdrawal of 13 candidates and the disqualification of seven others.

In the second constituency, 44 candidates will contest the 10 seats, following the withdrawal of 12 candidates and the disqualification of five others.

In the third constituency, the final list included 54 candidates as seven have quit while five others were disqualified. In the fourth constituency, 68 candidates stand for the coming election, down from 116 in the first list, as 37 candidates have pull out and 11 others were removed by the election commission. In the fifth constituency, the number of candidates stood at 69, vis-a-vis 140 candidates in the primary list, as 59 candidates withdrew and 12 others were disqualified by the election commission.

The statement concluded that the election commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and other relevant bodies have completed preparations for November 26th elections.
