06 October 2020 Coronavirus

There has been a steep increase in confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Kuwait in relation to the number of swabs conducted, as the percentage rose to 27 per cent on Sunday.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Health announced that there were 567 new cases registered in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 107,025. In terms of the number tests conducted, the total for Sunday was 2,050 totalling 757,815 tests. There were four new deaths recorded, raising the total of deaths to 624.

There are currently, 142 COVID-19 cases undergoing treatment in Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Abdullah Al Sanad, announced that there has been an 8 per cent increase in the occupancy rate of wards for COVID-19 patients and an 11 per cent increase in intensive care patients, compared to last month.

Al Sanad added that the second wave can occur at any point if preventive measures and health procedures are not followed.

He pointed out that while some countries have reimposed strict measures, Kuwait is not doing so as the smartest way to combat the pandemic is practicing individual awareness and social responsibility within the society.

Al Sanad indicated that there needs to be a joint effort between members of society and institutions in order to confront the virus.

According to statistics from ‘Our World In Data’ research centre at Oxford University, up until September 30, Kuwait was conducting an average of 894 tests a day per million persons.

Reducing quarantine

The Ministry of Health announced it has reduced the quarantine time for medical staff from 14 to 7 days. The decision came as the ministry is in need of more health professionals to help manage the COVID-19 crisis, an informed health source told Al Jarida.

Last week, 116 nurses arrived in Kuwait after being stranded in India since the beginning of the pandemic.

In July, Kuwait and Pakistan signed a health agreement to enhance cooperation between the two countries and combat the spread of the virus. Last month, Al Jarida reported that around 500 Pakistani health professionals were due to arrive in Kuwait at the end of September.
