MOI sources revealed that the file of domestic workers turned into something like a flame ball, and witnessed escalating developments and caught 150 expatriates who had formed gangs and were dealing with maids from Jan 2019 – Aug 2019 reports Al Qabas

The source added that the MOI, in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has intensified its efforts to improve the image of Kuwait in the areas of human rights and anti-trafficking of human beings, and the with help of the General Directorate of Residency Investigation resulted in the monitoring of these gangs which are mostly run by Asian nationals.

The source revealed that the investigations of General Directorate of Investigation of Residency stated that the housemaids of Asian nationalities are being incited to escape from the sponsors, and then being sold to new sponsors for money.

According to the same source, this serious information led to the offices of fake domestic workers which are run by these gangs, which reaped large amounts of money in a short period of time, and investigations also revealed these maids were kept in detention for short period before being sold to another buyer.

150 expats have been deported from the country and were blacklisted from re-entering Kuwait again. Also the maids who use to agree to this kind of business of escaping from sponsor have been in detention.

The Investigation of Residents Affairs mentioned that the process of trafficking in domestic workers is very active before the holy month of Ramadan, pointing out that the security services were able to arrest 1800 accused of brokering on girls and manipulation within three years.

In 2018, 420 persons were arrested for tampering with the Domestic Workers Act, in 2017 520 were arrested, and in 2016 860 persons were arrested and deported.

BBC had documented and revealed with spy camera how the trade of domestic workers have been going on in the country through social media and smart phones describing it as market as a slave trade, in terms of supply and demand, prices and details. According to the audio report, which was broadcasted 2 days back the around 50 traders offered domestic workers for sale through mobile apps.

The contract details between buyers and maids states that workers do not have vacations and have no right to retain their passports. Not having the right to resign or leave the country without the employer’s knowledge. Not only did the report reveal these abuses.

The director of the organization of the recruitment of domestic labor in the General Authority for Manpower Nasser al-Moussawi, promised to follow up, stressing ” We are at war with these applications and sites, and we have addressed some of them to prevent the presentation of domestic workers for sale”
