According to statistics issued by the concerned authority there has been a 90 percent increase in the number of deaths — Kuwaitis and residents — as a result of overdose of drugs during 2018, reports Al-Qabas daily.

The statistics say 115 people died — 50 Kuwaitis and 65 expatriates of different nationalities — most of them were young men. Morphine is said to be the biggest killer culprit.

The sources said that among the dead there were 6 women and 109 men. Bedoun in terms of rank came in second place for the highest number of deaths (18) of both sexes, followed by Egyptians with 10 dead (males), and the rest different nationalities.

The source explained the highest deaths in age group was between 31 and 40 was the highest as per recorded cases, followed by those between 41 and 50 and 21 to 30 years and 51 to 60 years simultaneously. The source stressed that the increase in the number of deaths by overdose is due to the spread of drugs because the drug dealers are concerned about making money only, since this their trade is the most profitable.

The source said that despite the increase in the number of drug seizures during the last period which can be termed remarkable there is lack of coordination between the security services and the customs authorities and this is one of the reasons why large quantities of drugs find their way into the country.

The sources stressed the drug addiction among adolescents in particular is on the rise and called on the ministries of Education, Social Affairs, Awqaf, Information and others to play out supporting role in awareness and rehabilitation.
