Kuwait Plans To Reopen Talks With Ethiopia About Rehiring Domestic Workers From Addis Ababa

10 February 2022 Kuwait

Bassam Al-Shammari, a domestic labor expert, disclosed that Kuwaiti-Ethiopian negotiations would resume in the coming days to finalize the signing of a memorandum of agreement to govern the recruitment of domestic workers from Addis Ababa.

Al-Shammari told Al-Jarida that this move would open a new door for the recruitment of domestic workers to address Kuwait's critical labor crisis, noting that many local offices are awaiting the signature of a memorandum of agreement between the two parties.

Al-Shammari emphasized the importance of allowing domestic workers from a variety of countries to be hired rather than limiting the issue to just two or three, particularly because allowing Ethiopian workers to be hired will help to create a "balance" in the market and alleviate the shortage of domestic workers.

According to Al-Shammari, allowing Ethiopians to work as housekeepers will assist to relieve the burden on citizens and residents because the cost of hiring and salary for Ethiopians is significantly lower than for others. He has urged the relevant authorities to resolve any previous issues that may have hampered the signing of the MoU.

He also requested that the Public Authority for Manpower hold 'online' binding training courses for its employees, office owners, and employers to familiarize them with how to deal with employment issues, particularly those involving labor disputes, in order to ensure that all parties' rights are protected.
